5 Biggest Mistakes During an Airline Interview :

Although the demand for pilots is increasing in such fast growing aviation markets as the Middle East, India or China, finding a job in European commercial airlines is still a difficult task for pilots at the moment. In order to be employed, a pilot must not only satisfy numerous requirements but also perform well in a job interview. Therefore, Baltic Aviation Academy has surveyed 5 representatives from different airlines and highlighted 5 biggest mistakes that are made during an airline interview.

Mistake no. 1: Trying to look better than you are.
Some of the candidates during a job interview try to pretend to be more experienced than they are in reality. Yet recruitment professionals seek to create certain circumstances so that the natural behaviour could appear and disclose all features of the candidate.

Mistake no. 2: Being late.
Punctuality is one of the most significant characteristics of a pilot as timing is very important in the aviation business. Flights have strict schedules that must be kept with and the pilot is partly responsible for that.

Mistake no. 3: Looking shy and scared.
Courage, resolve and determination are necessary for pilots. They must perform as effective team-players and be ready to seize the power in emergency situations. Thus, in an actual job interview all these features must be exposed.

Mistake no. 4: Looking not up to the standards.
Commercial pilots have a strict dress code. Be sure that your hair is neat, shoes are clean and clothes are ironed. the first impression always counts.

Mistake no 5: Lack of information about the company.
In aviation, as in any other industry, knowledge about the employer and its competitors is essential. Knowing nothing about the company demonstrates the lack of motivation and superficial attitude.
When choosing candidates the airlines’ recruitment representatives rely on a few main criteria: logical reasoning, perception, spatial comprehension, psychomotor function and multiple task-handling abilities. The pilot must also be confident in decision making, able to cope with huge amount of stress, have strong motivation and work ethics.

In order to satisfy the requirements, additional preparation for a job interview is recommended.  An (mock-up?) interview with HR professionals or experienced pilots can be arranged. After recording the conversation, mistakes can be analysed and more confidence gained. In addition to this, all available information about the company should be gathered with the intention of declaring your strong motivation to work for the particular airlines. What is more, culture differences must be considered. For instance, a long-haired pilot in Spain is normality, but in the United Kingdom only short hair is considered acceptable.

To sum up, before going to a job interview with the representatives of airlines, one must meet all the requirements, be confident and motivated. Meanwhile, Baltic Aviation Academy and all the surveyed airlines including Small Planet Airlines, LOT Airlines, White Airways, Vueling Airlines and SkyWork Airlines, wish all the best for those looking for the best job in the aviation industry.
